Metal Fabrication vs. Welding: What Does Your Project Need?

DAWC fabricated steel mezzanine and catwalk framing

Welding joins metal components. Fabrication is the broader process of turning a design into a finished metal assembly, which can include cutting, shaping, fitting and welding. A custom stair, gate or structural steel assembly often needs both.

When welding is part of the job

Welding can connect new components or form part of a repair. The right approach depends on the metal, existing condition, intended use and project requirements. A close-up photograph is useful, but it cannot establish the condition of an entire structure or replace an on-site assessment.

When you need fabrication

A new steel mezzanine, custom gate or railing usually involves more than a single weld. Dimensions, connections, finish and fit with the surrounding building all need to be coordinated. DAWC’s portfolio includes commercial steel erection, interior mezzanine and catwalk framing, architectural screening, and exterior stair and railing work.

Where installation fits

A finished assembly also needs a plan for site access, mounting and installation. For a building project, share available plans and the requirements supplied by your design team. Fabrication and installation decisions should follow the approved project scope, not assumptions made from a reference image.

What to send DAWC

Describe whether you need a new assembly, a replacement or a repair. Add the project city, approximate dimensions, photos of the site and any drawings. Choose structural steel, architectural metals, railings and stairs, or the closest service in the quote form. If you are unsure, explain the intended result so the team can review the scope.
